What’s the difference between a gantry milling machine and a gantry planer?
A gantry milling machine is a type of milling machine featuring a portal‑style frame and a horizontal, long bed. It offers high machining accuracy and productivity, making it well suited for producing large workpieces with flat and inclined surfaces in batch and mass production. CNC gantry milling machines can also machine spatial curved surfaces and certain specially shaped parts.
Gantry planers are primarily used for planing large workpieces and can also accommodate multiple parts clamped on the table for simultaneous machining, making them the “mother machine” of industry. The worktable of a gantry planer carries the workpiece and moves in a straight reciprocating motion beneath the gantry frame, with the rapid‑return speed exceeding the working‑stroke speed. Typically, two vertical toolposts are mounted on the crossbeam; the toolpost slides can swivel through a certain angle in the vertical plane and perform transverse feed motions along the crossbeam.

On a gantry milling machine, multiple cutters can simultaneously machine surfaces, resulting in relatively high production efficiency. It is well suited for both batch and single‑piece production and is used to machine medium‑sized and large workpieces.
